IBS is a condition that affects the intestines and causes pain in the stomach. What causes this condition has not yet been discovered. Abnormal nervous system signals, high level of sensitivity to pain and inability of the body to tolerate with certain foods are the things that are believed to cause this disorder.
The effect of the syndrome is different to each and everyone. Common symptoms of this disorder include frequent belching, frequently passing gas from your rectum and from your lower bowel and having a noisy stomach. This normally is a big embarrassment to the victims. Most don’t know that these problems are not as a result of a medical problem. This normally causes diarrhea and increased urge to go for a long call.
Other symptoms of IBS include cramping and abdominal pain. Though this disorder does not cause stomach ulcers and permanent damage of intestines.
Different factors can cause this disorder to occur in a human being. These factors include the abnormal moving of intestines that is a very strong movement of the intestines. Also too slow or too fast movements of these intestines can lead to the condition. Viral or bacterial infections in the intestines can lead to IBS condition.
Poor absorption of acids and sugars in the food can effectively cause IBS. IBS can be caused by psychological conitions such as anxiety and stress. Also IBS can be as a result of overgrown intestinal bacteria and imbalance of reproductive hormones in the body. Though this has not been proved, IBS can be caused by genetics.
Testing of IBS can be done by the diagnosis of the related symptoms over six months period. IBS tests are normally carried out through blood testing, stool testing and the use of X-rays. Two blood tests are carried out when using a blood test method to diagnose IBS. One test is for IBS with diarrhea only and the other is for diarrhea and constipation.
It is a condition that can’t be cured but medications do help a lot. It is treated by change if lifestyle and foods to be taken and relieving medications. This is because what a person eats can affect the symptoms of the condition.
Some foods such as fiber supplements, foods rich in carbohydrates and herbs such an Aloe Vera help reduce the symptoms. Also drinking a lot of water can help. High fibre foods are very helpful but they can be disastrous if they are taken in high quantities. A certain amount of fiber is recommended per day. Foods such as dairy products, vegetables that has high amount of gas, fried foods, Caffeine, alcohol and artificial sweeteners should be avoided. The patient should avoid smoking and do exercises.
